Every year H&M collaborates with designers and have immaculate pieces produced which goes out of stock 30 seconds after they hit the sales floor. This year they will be working with the House of Lanvin for a winter 2010 collection. Although the usual winter colours are rather dark and grey, I do hope the collection takes in Lavin’s bright floral colours.
Alber Elbaz, artistic director of Lanvin says the collaboration is not about ‘dress for less’ but bringing Lanvin to the masses. Of course it is a very smart move, these days it is more dash than cash, savvy shoppers knows better, it is more about style than how much one spends on an outfit.
Fast fashion has changed the system completely; its pace allows trends to crop up out of the most ordinary places rather than trickling down from catwalks. High street has become a significant force and muse in fashion, high street and high fashion now go hand in hand. Designers cannot do whatever whimsical thought or ideal that they have in mind, they have to cater for the public too, not forgetting the golden rule of retailing: Consumer is king.
